Seth Kimmel, “Interpreting Accuracy”, JMEMS 40.2 (2010)

Seth R. Kimmel (PhD UC Berkeley; Mellon post-Doctoral student at Stanford University from August 2010) has just published this outstanding article on the calculation of longitude in Early Modern Europe, and the political uses of inaccuracy during he construction of the Iberian Atlantic -and Pacific- Empires. His highly sophisticated interpretations, that challenge some of the best known ones about cartography and cosmography during the early modern period, are backed by his knowledge of complex primary sources and archival materials. The full title is “Interpreting Accuracy: the Fiction of Longitude in Early Modern Spain“, Journal of Medieval and Early Modern Studies, 40.2 (2010): 299-323. You can also download the article in pdf by clicking on this link.
