L'instant ne saurait pas exister en dehors de l'histoire. Et c'est pour cela que la photographie n'est que le sacre de l'histoire, dans la mesure où à chaque fois qu'on appui sur le déclencheur, on est en train de produire des instants qui, autrement, auraient arrêté d'exister aussitôt qu'ils auraient été prononcés. Tout instant est, donc, l'nstant décisif lorqu'il ést dévenu photographie, puisqu'il est désormais une présence pour la pensée.
