Mme. X appartient un peu à l'histoire et beaucoup au roman. Lorsqu'elle se borne à remplir, un par un, les carrés d'un millimètre sur un millimètre de ses cahiers avec sa lettre de maîtresse d'école de durant-la-guerre -la Grande Guerre, bien entendu-, elle se détache tout-à-fait de tout-ce qu'elle a vécu, du fait même qu'elle à vécu. Elle a décidé de ne s'en souvenir plus, afin de mieux raccolter des fruits de la mémoire.
